Disability is not an inability

In line with the commitment of Labor Secretary Silvestre ‘Bebot’ H. Bello III in protecting the rights and promoting the economic empowerment of persons with disability, the Department of Labor and Employment – Cagayan Field Office (DOLE-CFO) headed by Ms. Grace A. Pomar awarded a livelihood starter kit amounting to P30,000.00 to a PWD Beneficiary through the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP).

The beneficiary of the livelihood program was Mr. Ronald G. Austria, 58 years old, from Caggay, Tuguegarao City. He has Type 3 diabetes which caused blindness to his left eye and lower limb loss by amputation. The livelihood starter kit is worth P30,000.00 for his sari-sari store and bigasan business.

Before the awarding of the grocery supplies, Mr. Austria was also given a Basic Work Improvement Course (BWIC) by the field office, which aims to strengthen his entrepreneurial capacities in managing the operations of his sari-sari store. The highlight of the crash course was basic bookkeeping, marketing, production and management, occupational safety and health standards.

Mr. Austria meanwhile expressed his gratitude to the labor department for the provision of livelihood assistance, enabling him to have a sustainable source of income for his basic needs and medical treatments.

“Maraming salamat sa DOLE… sa ipinagkaloob ninyong pangkabuhayan na ito. Mayroon na akong pagkukunan para sa gastusin ko [sa pang] araw- araw at pambili ng gamot para sa aking [sakit],” Mr. Austria said.

The DILP starter kit project aims to provide livelihood formation to displaced and disadvantaged workers and sectors with special concerns. This intervention aims to enable target beneficiaries to start livelihood undertakings and become self-employed. ###
