Success Story: Embracing every opportunity for self-improvement

Karisha Mae C. Retrato, 23 years old of Banganan, Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya

Like an empty bottle, I was always afraid to fill my life with experience, always hesitant to try new things until a friend of mine told me that there are schools that were in need of licensed Municipal Special Education Fund (MSEF) Teachers. At first, I was hesitant to apply, but with enough motivation given by important people in my life, I decided to submit my application. A few days later, one of the staff called and told me that they already hired MSEF teachers but that the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) was looking for an intern to be part of their Government Internship Program (GIP). The said program aims to provide opportunities to serve the general public through working at government agencies. He asked me if I wanted to be part of it, and without hesitation, I grabbed the offer.

That day, I was so happy because I was chosen to be part of the program and was deployed in the Municipal Engineering Office (MEO) of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Aritao. I gave my best as a public servant in assisting MEO clients, routing MEO files, and performing messengerial-services. I tried my best in establishing a good relationship with every employee in our office.

After three months, my contract as a GIP ended. Since working in a government office is a privilege, I tried applying again in LGU- Aritao as a job order. To my surprise, they accepted me. God is really good and I was grateful for it, because my efforts and performance were recognized by my previous superiors.

I am very thankful to the DOLE family, to LGU Aritao, and most of all to God, who gave me the opportunity to explore and start a new career as a public servant. Hopefully, I will become one of the regular employees soon.

I realize that having patience and perseverance in everything you do and having a strong faith in God will pay-off all your efforts. Never be afraid to try any opportunity that will come along your way because I believe that they are part of God’s plans. As Paolo Coelho once said, “Seize every opportunity that life offers you because when opportunities go, they take a long time to come back.” ###
