Former rebels’ “Egg Laying Production” yields P233K in net profit

The Egg Laying Production Project of SALAKNIB FORMER REBELS INTEGRATED FARM ASSOCIATION in Barangay Zone 1, San Mariano, Isabela funded by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 2 has yielded 233,079 pesos in net profit last year.

The livelihood project worth 1.2 million pesos was awarded to the association early part of last year in collaboration with Local Government Unit (LGU) of San Mariano and the 95th Infantry Battalion of the 5th Infantry Division (ID) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Upi, Gamu, Isabela.

Forty-three (43) former rebels (FRs), members of the association were equipped with entrepreneurial skills, their stepping stone in achieving self-sufficiency, and as part of their preparation for their reintegration into the mainstream of society.

The former rebels, together with their families are temporarily taken care of at the Happy Farm Ville at the 5th ID compound. This serves as a “haven” for rebel returnees towards self-sufficiency. Moreover, the Farm Ville was set up to nurture the former rebels to bring them back to normal life.

For their transition to normal life, they were treated and processed through various training and were taught entrepreneurship that had facilitate their access to livelihood opportunities from DOLE through the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) of San Mariano.

Through the de-radicalization program of the AFP in collaboration with the LGU San Mariano, the FRs became receptive to the rehabilitation process.  They were subjected to perform several activities such as gardening, moral recovery, Sunday mass, and attending lectures on Philippine history and socioeconomic theories, among others.

In 2020, AFP had networked and established collaborations with the local and the national government agencies in Isabela province to undertake the full social development of the former rebels. The collaborations resulted in the provision of housing units for each FR from LGU San Mariano, AFP, and other government agencies, and the provision of livelihood Project-Egg Laying Production.

Aside from the raw materials and equipment for the “Egg Laying” project received by the association, DOLE provided a series of training and seminars to equip them with the necessary skills to manage their business well and efficiently. Members are also covered by the Group Personal Accident Insurance of GSIS for their protection.

The DOLE in collaboration with the LGU San Mariano and the Armed Forces of the Philippines - 5th Infantry Division has rendered technical assistance on business and organizational management to improve the business operations.  Moreover, DOLE together with the PESO manager conducted a series of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to engage officers and members in addressing gaps in project implementation, and decision making.  The two FGDs conducted were, Improving the market of Egg products and establishing a strategy to recover from the onslaught of   COVID 19, and possible options for project expansion.

The provision of livelihood assistance to this group of economically challenged individuals has improved their living conditions as shown in the result of the survey conducted by DOLE personnel. This project has provided the beneficiaries with a sustainable income-generating activity that leads to improved socio-economic development in the community.

The members received more than 5,000.00 in profit share for the period January 2021 to January 2022.

The impact of this project was apparent in the reports submitted as it was able to change the lives and values of the beneficiaries. Their life in the mountains fighting against the government had changed their disposition in life when the government had started to be mindful of their future. They realized that the support from the government will bring them slowly into the mainstream of economic life. The project outcome is now contributing to poverty reduction, employment generation, and better income-generating activity of the people in the community.

This led the association or the former rebels to the realization that the government is indeed helping the ex-rebels to start anew, contradicting the narrative inside the communist movement which proved to be nothing but lies. It aspires for greatness, especially in the implementation of the project, and to demonstrate its relevance to society.

The association aims to become the leading egg supplier in town, to improve the financial management skill of the officers and members, to discover business innovations, to be more dependable and reliable through constant personal interaction with customers and government agencies.

They will make decisions based on the results of consultation with people, inputs and suggestions of others after careful analysis and they will discuss with DOLE and LGU personnel about their plan to boost the implementation of the project and possible project expansion for proper direction.  ###
