Tabang OFW program ensures education continuity amidst the pandemic

During these trying times, everyone’s job is at stake. Establishments have started downsizing especially when they are not able to support their operations or due to insufficiency of resources to stabilize the company. This is the biggest fear of everyone especially our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

This is where the TABANG OFW Program comes in. The program is a Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) for college dependents of OFWs who were repatriated, displaced or deceased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Beneficiaries of the program receive a one-time grant of thirty thousand pesos (Php 30,000.00) that can be used by an OFW’s dependent who were enrolled for Academic Year 2020-2021. In partnership with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) UniFAST, the department is able to extend its assistance to the “Modern Day Heroes” who were greatly affected during the pandemic.

The program is one of the government’s interventions to extend its support to OFWs who lose their job due to COVID-19. It is intended to help the OFWs and their dependents who are in their tertiary level of education. Since these OFWs finance the education of their dependents, the program gives opportunity for these college students to continue and pursue higher education.

One of the beneficiaries of the TABANG OFW program is Mr. Michael John M. Alegado, a seafarer and a resident of Centro 1, Sanchez Mira, Cagayan. He was repatriated by his company last June 2020 due to the pandemic. Aside from providing the needs of his family, he also helps his parents in settling the school fees of her sister, Ms. Rogelu Marsha M. Alegado, a third-year college student who is majoring in Biology at Mariano Marcos State University.

Muli, maraming salamat po,” Mr. Alegado said.

During this pandemic, many of our OFWs dread that they might not be able to return abroad. Some choose to hope that they will eventually be able to continue their journey here or abroad. But what is certain is that the government ensures that no one will be left behind. ###
