DOLE RO2 penalizes construction companies for violation of Occupational Safety and Health

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan – Two companies paid penalties amounting to P100,000 for violations of Occupational Safety and Health yesterday, September 22, 2020.

The sanction was because of an incident that happened earlier this month that caused the demise of one worker and a permanent disability in another from an electrocution incident at their site of work.

Upon further investigation by regional office labor inspectors, the construction company was found to be in violation of General Labor Standards as they had no records keeping and because of non-coverage with SSS, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG of some workers.

The construction company also violated Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Standards as there was no Work Accident Illness Report (WAIR) submitted, there are no organized Safety and Health Committee, no Annual Medical Report and no OSH Policies and Programs.

The administrative fee of P100,000 levied on the company was enforced by DOLE RO2 under R.A. 11058 entitled An Act Strengthening Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standards and Providing Penalties for Violations Thereof and its implementing rules and regulations under DOLE Department Order No. 198 Series of 2018.

A Work Stoppage Order for the building construction was also issued by the regional office because the danger at the construction site has not yet been abated.

Engr. Joseph B. Sales, Head of DOLE RO2’s Technical Services and Support Division (TSSD), also urged workers who have labor issues to head to the nearest DOLE field office or at the regional office of this city so the proper steps can be taken to resolve their concerns. ###
