DOLE 2 onsets info drive to implement new Occupational Safety and Health Law

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan --- Republic Act No. 11058, An Act Strengthening Compliance With Occupational Safety and Health Standards and Providing Penalties for Violations Thereof, was signed into law and took effect 25 January 2019.

The new law requires employers, contractors, sub-contractors, or any person who manages, controls, supervises work, to provide workplace that is safe from conditions that could cause death, illness, or physical harm.

It also specifies various rights of workers such as right to be informed about safety hazards in the workplace, right to refuse unsafe work standards, right to report violation of Occupational Safety and Health Standards, and right to be provided personal protective equipment free of charge.

Employees are encouraged to participate in ensuring compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standards by reporting any work hazard that may be discovered therein.

Violations of this law carry with it fines ranging from P20, 000.00 to P100, 000.00 for every day that a violation is not remedied, counting from the day the employer is notified or the compliance order is issued by DOLE.

DOLE 2 Regional Director Atty. Sarah Buena S. Mirasol directed all Labor Inspectors to disseminate information regarding the implementation of Occupational Safety and Health Standards.

“We now have a law, so let us work hard in imposing this law and its compliance and provide our workers with the minimum protection required,” Dir. Mirasol said.

She further urges companies to voluntarily comply with the provisions of RA 11058 and encourages workers to be more assertive of their rights, saying the law allows them to report violations so they should insist on this right provided to them.

“We hope and we are looking forward to more employers and business owners complying with the new Occupational Safety and Health Standards and minimizing workplace deaths and injuries,” she added.

RA 11058 was promulgated to strengthen constitutional policy affirming safe and healthful workplace for workers, imposing penalty or declares unlawful violations on OSHS. (END/JVP/RBE)
