DOLE 2, partners conduct medical-dental mission for sugarcane workers

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan --- A total of three hundred sixty eight (368) local sugarcane workers and their families were accommodated and were provided with medical and dental services in a mission conducted by the Department of Labor and Employment – Regional Office No. 2 and its partners in Barangay Sto. Domingo, Piat, Cagayan.

The mission which was conducted last week, was accomplished with full support from the Cagayan Valley Medical Center (CVMC), Physician – Hospital Organization (PHO) and Philippine National Police (PNP) which sent a team of medical health personnel that included doctors and nurses. The physicians conducted consultations and checked for ailments of the beneficiaries. The Department of Health also sent 14 dentists and provided three (3) dental buses where they executed tooth extractions. Medicines and supplemental vitamins were donated by the Sugar Industry Foundation, Inc. (SIFI).

According to DOLE Regional Director Atty. Sarah Buena S. Mirasol there were 286 sugarcane workers and their families who were given medical check-ups with free medicines and 82 were provided with dental services.

“This kind of activity is one of the priorities of the government because we all know the danger that is associated to your work and how hazardous it could be. Through this activity, we hope to lessen your expenses allotted for your health concerns, thus providing some savings or additional income instead,” Dir. Mirasol said.

The medical and dental mission is an annual activity of the District Tripartite Council chaired by Director Mirasol under the DOLE’s Social Amelioration Program (SAP) for sugar workers which aims to promote the health and welfare of the sugarcane workers and their dependents.

The SAP primarily aims to augment the socio – economic status of the sugarcane workers particularly in giving them livelihood assistance, training and vocational education assistance, social protection and welfare benefits and emergency assistance. (END/JVP/RBE)
