1,806 displaced workers benefit from P20M emergency employment
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan---Ending the year 2017, the Department of Labor and Employment – Regional Office No. 2 has released 20 million in total assistance for 1,806 beneficiaries under the DOLE Emergency Employment Program.

The onslaught of northeast monsoon and tail end of cold front hardly hit the province of Cagayan especially those located in coastal and low-lying areas. This caused for the devastation of corn and palay fields which is the province’s main source of livelihood and left farmers helpless and displaced from their source of living.

According to DOLE 2 Regional Director Manuel C. Roldan, with the help of the Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para Sa Ating Displaced/Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP), the victims were given opportunity to be employed and render service specifically community-based work for 30 days.

“The DOLE – TUPAD is a project to help displaced workers aid their needs through a short-term employment while facing crisis,” Dir. Roldan said.

Each worker was paid with an amount of P10, 200 at the end of their employment which they accomplished from November 20 to December 23, 2017, wherein they worked for community infrastructure projects such as road clearing and de clogging of canals.

The workers were also provided with PPEs such as working hats and long-sleeved shirts and an insurance for a period of one year.

Mr. Orlando Casay, a farmer from Baggao, Cagayan is one of the beneficiaries of the TUPAD. Having a family to feed, he struggled to find alternative sources for their daily needs.

“Masaya ako at isa ako sa mga mapapalad na nabiyayan ng DOLE-TUPAD bilang isang benepisyaryo. Malaki ang aking pasasalamat dahil nagkaroon ako ng konting perang maipangpupuhanan sa maliit na negosyong aming itatayo ng aking pamilya,” Orlando shared during the giving of their salary. (END/JVP/RBE)
