Sec. Bello awards ₱14.2M emergency employment assistance to displaced workers in Cagayan

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan---As part of the disaster recovery effort of the government, Secretary Silvestre Bello III of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has awarded a certificate of entitlement totaling to ₱14,247,925.00 to provide emergency employment to 1,355 displaced workers by the recent flooding in Cagayan.

The said assistance, which is under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para Sa Ating Displaced/Disadvantaged Workers program of DOLE, will benefit workers from the municipalities of Alcala, Amulung, Aparri, Baggao, Buguey, Camalanuigan, Enrile, Gonzaga, Lallo, Lasam, Pamplona, Piat, Sta. Ana, Sta. Teresita, and the city of Tuguegarao.

DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III lead the awarding of Certificate of Entitlement to the beneficiaries held at Tuao, Cagayan last week together with DOLE Region 2 Director Manuel C. Roldan.

The DOLE budget covers the beneficiaries’ salary worth ₱340.00 per day based on the prevailing minimum wage rate in Region 2, micro-insurance premium for 1 year and personal protective equipment (PPE’s) such as working long-sleeved shirts which they will be using at work.

DOLE Regional Director Manuel C. Roldan during the awarding of the certificates stressed to the beneficiaries the importance of the orientation that they need to undergo to avoid being victims of culprits who may take the advantage of them.

“You should know the exact amount of what you’re working for which will be ₱10,200 for 30 days because we do not tolerate those who will take advantage on you. You need to receive that exact amount without any deductions at the end of your employment,” Director Roldan said.

The workers will be employed for thirty (30) days to render community clean up activities, de clogging of canals, waterways and sewerage. This will enable the beneficiaries to engage in short-term community works to provide them with temporary employment and at the same time help in the beautification and cleaning of their community.
Furthermore, Secretary Bello explained the help being offered to the beneficiaries under the DOLE-TUPAD.
Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) is a community-based package of assistance that provides emergency employment for displaced workers, underemployed and seasonal workers, for a minimum period of 10 days, but not to exceed a maximum of 30 days, depending on the nature of work to be performed. It is one of the Department of Labor and Employment’s contribution to the government agenda of inclusive growth through massive job generation and poverty reduction,” Secretary Bello said.
