DOLE 2 settles money claims of 109 employees, issues order to regularize 52 workers

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan---The Department of Labor and Employment – Regional Office No. 2 (DOLE 2) through its Joint Assessment conducted at Unitop General Merchandise, INC. in this city led to the granting of ₱812,948 worth of monetary claims to 109 employees earlier this month.

According to DOLE 2 Regional Director Manuel C. Roldan, based on the Joint Assessment conducted last March, DOLE 2 found that Unitop General Merchandise violated some provisions of General Labor Standards particularly on payment of minimum wage, overtime pay, holiday pay and social protection coverage like SSS, PhilHealth and Pag-Ibig.

“We have issued a compliance order against Unitop to pay differential for salary and overtime and holiday pay to 109 employees,” Dir. Roldan said.

Cristy Butay, one of their employees, received an amount of ₱5,000 as settlement of her monetary claim.  Also, she is now regular employee of Unitop and already covered with social protection.

“Masaya po ako dahil natanggap ko na yung saktong sahod na kapalit ng aking serbisyo at lubos akong nagpapasalamat sa DOLE dahil sa kanilang tulong,” Butay said in an interview during the claiming of their payments.

Mr. Pio Bautista, Chief of Technical Services and Support Division of DOLE 2 witnessed the payment of monetary claims of the employees at the UNITOP Mall.

Director Roldan also stressed that the help and cooperation of the employees during the conduct of assessment made the instantaneous movement of the process.

Furthermore, the Director also urged for other employees to take a move and report violations of their employers to DOLE 2 for proper solutions to take place.

“Our office will always be open to all employees in the private sector to receive complaints or labor issues against their employers.  We assure you that we will act accordingly,” Dir. Roldan added.

Applying the teeth of the law, DOLE 2 in its Compliance Order to Unitop, ordered for the regularization of 52 workers who have been reporting beyond the 6 months probationary period.  

The DOLE 2 is implementing the Labor Laws Compliance System which aims to foster a culture of voluntary compliance with Labor Laws by all establishments.  It is a mix of developmental and regulatory approaches that benefit enterprises and address existing rigidities while ensuring decent and productive work.  It has 2 components – Joint Assessment for the routinary evaluation of establishments and Compliance Visit for complaints received.
