DOLE 2 spearheads medical-dental mission for sugarcane workers

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan - A total of 313 sugarcane workers and their dependents benefited from the medical and dental mission that was organized by the Department of Labor and Employment – Regional Office No. 2 (DOLE 2). 

The one-day activity, which was conducted in Furagui, Solana on 21 July 2017, was assisted by nurses, doctors and dentists from Cagayan Valley Medical Center, Universal Robina Corporation-Cagayan Robina Sugar Milling Corporation (URC-CARSUMCO) and LGU Solana, Cagayan.  They provided free consultations and diagnostic examinations and treated minor illnesses of the beneficiaries.

DOLE 2 Regional Director Manuel C. Roldan stressed the importance of being physically fit most especially to workers who work in perilous areas which has a high possibility of having their lives at risk.

“Good health condition and proper health care will not only let our workers do their jobs with vigor but also help them lessen their risk of spending money due to health problems,” Dir. Roldan said.

Free medicines to the beneficiaries were provided by the Department of Health (DOH) and Sugarcane Industry Federation Inc. (SIFI).

Some of the common cases of complaints referred to the mission team were high blood pressures, cough, diarrhea, skin diseases, and asthma. Eighty-eight (88) beneficiaries also availed the free tooth extraction.

The activity was co-organized by the District Tripartite Council (DTC) CARSUMCO Mill District in partnership with URC-CARSUMCO, Local Government Unit of Solana, and the Barangay Officials of Furagui.

This activity is in line with the DOLE’s Social Amelioration Program (SAP) of sugarcane workers which aims to enhance their socio-economic status which includes conducting medical and dental missions and promoting basic preventive health care, nutrition and hygiene practices. It is also an annual project of the DTC of CARSUMCO Mill District to uplift health and welfare of the sugarcane workers and their families.

The DOLE 2 continues its service in giving the right benefits and assistance that each workers/employees must have in order to protect them and help them improve their living condition. (END/JVP/RBE)
