21 security guards receive monetary claims after DOLE 2’s intervention

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan --- The Department of Labor and Employment- Regional Office 2 (DOLE 2) recently helped in settling the monetary claims of 21 security guards of Merit Protection and Investigation Agency (MPIA) and posted at the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines located at the Airport of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

Nineteen (19) security guards received an amount of ₱13,000.00 each while the remaining two (2) received an amount of ₱10,000.00 each.

The monetary settlement stemmed up from the complaint that was filed by the 21 security guards to the DOLE 2 alleging that MPIA and CAAP committed defiance of labor laws.

DOLE 2 immediately issued an Inspection Authority called Compliance Visit to Labor Laws Compliance Officer, James Onofre Mendoza, at MPIA.

The said compliance visit resulted in the identification of the findings/deficiencies which includes no records keeping, non-implementation of minimum wage, non-provision of 5-day service incentive leave, non-provision of emergency medicines and first aid paraphernalia, and no written policies for various Administrative Orders of DOLE.

According to Mr. Guillermo C. Tan, Supervising Labor and Employment Officer of DOLE 2, the two respondents failed to comply within the agreed period despite the length of time given to them.

“A decision was reached that the two respondents shall be given one (1) month to coordinate and discuss with each other the issue of settlement relative to the monetary claims of the complainants,” Guillermo said.

Brought by the inaction of the respondents, an order was made letting them pay the total amount of Two Hundred Sixty Seven Thousand (₱267,000.00) pesos to the 21 security guards.

On the other hand, Regional Director, Manuel C. Roldan encourages employees in the private sector who experience similar practice of non-compliance to Labor Laws by employers to seek assistance from DOLE 2.

 “In line with the mandate of DOLE to safeguard and promote the welfare of every employees, we assure to workers who file complaints in any of our offices in Region 2 that we will act accordingly,” Dir. Roldan said. (END/JVP/RBE)
