TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan---As a continuing effort to reduce the incidence of child labor in Region 2, the Department of Labor and Employment – Regional Office No. 2 (DOLE 2) has recently granted ₱359,793.00 livelihood assistance to some 36 parents of child laborers in Cauayan City, Isabela.
“It is our aim in the long run to eradicate child labor by providing livelihood assistance to the parents of child laborers. Child labor has been linked to poverty and lack of decent and productive work,” Atty. Sixto T. Rodriguez, Jr., DOLE 2 Regional Director said.
“In Cauayan City, the financial assistance to the parents of child laborers will enable them to engage in business undertakings like having a variety store, cooked food vending and vegetable/fruits/meat/fish vending. With these, the children are no longer required to work because their parents are already provided with a steady source of income,” Atty. Rodriguez added.
The Isabela Field Office of DOLE 2 together with the Cauayan City Social Welfare and Development Office identified the beneficiaries who are from barangays San Pablo and Casalatan.
The children worked as household helpers, stevedores (“pahenante”) and farm laborers in order to augment their family income.
Meanwhile, Henry Balangatan, Head of DOLE Isabela Field Office urged the beneficiaries to take care of the assistance provided to them.
“Together, let us be an instrument to eradicate poverty. May we value, safeguard, and make successful this livelihood provided to you and your family,” Balangatan said.
The Cauayan City government expressed its deep gratitude to DOLE 2 for the assistance.
“Ating yakapin, tangkilikin, palaguin ang pagkakataon na ipinagkaloob sa atin upang maibsan ang kahirapan. In behalf of Mayor Bernard Dy, we would like to thank the DOLE for the continued support and partnership,” City Councilor Garry Galutera said,
In Region 2, the campaign for Child Labor Free-Barangays started in 2012 at Piat, Cagayan. The campaign aims to gradually prevent and eliminate all forms of child labor anchored on the theme, Pagtutulungan, Pagpapalaya sa mga Batang Manggagawa. (END/RBE/with reports from Divine Grace P. Cristobal)
